International Conference SGA’19 – Sustainability in Environmental Management. Innovation and challenges for Portuguese-Speaking Countries | 4–5 June | Técnico Congress Centre
The growing importance and challenges of the environment and the pursuit of sustainability (efficiency in the cycles of energy, water, materials and their circularity; climate change; consideration of ecosystem services; pursuit of happiness) in the management of the environment in organisations and products introduce new paradigms, innovations, and practices that are essential.

These perspectives challenge: environmental management systems (ISO 14001 or EMAS); corporate social responsibility (ISO 26000); development of sustainability reports (GRI); life cycle assessment (ISO 14040) and product ecolabelling (ISO 14020); consideration of ecosystem services and happiness concepts; stakeholder engagement and governance; environmental marketing of products and services.

The Portuguese-speaking countries encompass 278 million people; a combined gross national product of 480 billion euros, 7.2% of the planet’s land area (10.7 million km²), spread across four continents: Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. Sustainability issues in environmental management are one of the important areas that are sometimes less addressed in literature and discussions.

The aim of SGA’19 is to promote a forum for presenting innovations and practices in the pursuit of sustainability, involving active participation from organisations in the private, public, and social sectors in areas such as the environment, energy, agriculture, trade, tourism, municipal management, financial services, communication, and more.

It also aims to foster technical-scientific discussions in Portuguese within the professional and academic communities, and strengthen networks of professionals who integrate sustainability practices in environmental management within their activities, focusing on the particularities of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
